Gawker Media Grabs CTO From Google For More Political Shenanigans

Latest Nick Denton memo delivers that news and much more.

After welcoming back founder Nick Denton to Reliable Sources, the CNN media reporter has shared an internal memo from Denton circulating ahead of Monday’s big move and site relaunch. Among the announcements:

I am pleased to announce the arrival of a new CTO, who joins Gawker Media from Google. Ian Fette’s arrival next week is a new impetus for the Technology team that underpins our media brands and the communities of writers and readers that gather around them. Ian began his career at the Defense Intelligence Agency and latterly managed development of the Google Chrome browser. He will be a great addition, applying experience in machine learning and other software skills to the media platform. Ian will also be part of the Managing Partnership.

In the memo, Denton also outlines a new procedure for the hiring, firing and-or overriding of Gawker’s executive editor as well as plans for dialogue with a Writer’s Guild rep, beginning in August, of editorial code. Read the full memo here.

Fette joined Google in 2007 as a senior product manager and moved over to the position of engineering manager in 2013. He will be relocating from San Francisco.
